Memphis went 6-6 in 2021 and watched every other meaningful team in the AAC get picked off by the Big 12 over the offseason. In 2023 they will be left alone unless they find another conference waiting with open arms. They need to have a big season to prove that they deserve to get elevated out of a dying conference.

Mississippi State is obviously safe in the SEC, but Mike Leach wants to make sure his job in Starkville is safe too. The Bulldogs went 7-6 last season and are looking to take a step into SEC contention.

Let’s check out the odds for this one at WynnBET sportsbook.

Memphis vs. Mississippi State Prediction and Pick

Will Rogers is back in Starkville after throwing for 4,739 yards and 36 touchdowns in Leach’s air raid system last season. We know what we are going to get from a Leach team and Rogers is just the next quarterback to excel and put up inflated numbers.

That will never change and this system will never be viable enough to win the SEC. Not that really any system would be able to bring Mississippi State to compete with the likes of Alabama and Georgia.

It should be a good enough system to put up serious points against Memphis in their season opener. The Bulldogs have lost two of their top receivers, but Jalen Walley is back after putting up 625 yards on 55 catches a year ago. He will step into the No. 1 role and the passing game shouldn’t miss a beat. Remember when KJ Costello threw for 600 yards against LSU in the season opener. That was Leach’s first game in Starkville.

Memphis will probably be able to go shot for shot with the Bulldogs. The Tigers have Seth Henigan back for his sophomore season after putting up 3,322 yards as a freshman.

Both offenses will be effective through the air and if they keep scoring quick, the defense will get tired as they often do in the early season. Especially in Mississippi heat.

Pick: Over 55.5 (-110)
