Weather caused the Mets and Cubs to postpone the game scheduled for last night, so we’ve got a day/night double dip at Wrigley. If that wasn’t enough of a treat for you, Game 2 gives us a chance to enjoy Max Scherzer on the mound. Chicago goes with Drew Smyly.

It has been a tough stretch for Chicago leading into the break, facing three of the best teams in baseball. The Cubs were swept by the Dodgers, dropped one to the Mets and in between, they lost both games of a mini-series to the Baltimore Orioles. They’ll try to pull off the upset in the nightcap against New York.

Mets vs. Cubs Prediction and Pick

Max Scherzer is a freak and since he’s come back from injury that has been on full display. 11 strikeouts over six scoreless innings in his return on July 5 and nine K’s over seven innings of one run ball on July 11. He did not miss a beat and his 2.15 is one of the best in the league and he should have no issues with the Cubs lineup.

Though the Chicago lineup is actually in the top half of the league in OPS at No. 14. Scherzer has faced the Reds, 22nd in OPS and the Braves, 4th in OPS since his return and it doesn’t matter.

The way I am thinking about this game in within the context of the doubleheader. The bullpen will likely be somewhat taxed from the early game and Drew Smyly has not given Chicago much length all year. He has a 4.43 ERA and has only gone beyond the fifth inning twice in ten starts. Somebody may just have to eat innings and the Mets might hit the over on their own.

Lean: Over 7.0 (-115)
