Micah Parsons Predicted to Lead Cowboys Defense Against Bucs in Week 1
By Peter Dewey
Dallas Cowboys first-round pick Micah Parsons is the Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite at +500 odds at WynnBET, and he’s expected to have a major role in Week 1.
Parsons is going to do a little bit of everything at linebacker this season. NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger broke down how Dan Quinn has built Dallas’ defense around Parsons to put him in situations to succeed and use his unique skill set.
While Parsons is great in coverage in the clip that Baldinger shared, he spends a lot of time near the line of scrimmage as a pass rusher and a run stopper, which makes sense considering his prop for tackles in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
WynnBET is projecting Parsons to make 7.5 tackles and assists in Week 1, with the over on his prop as the slight underdog (-104) to the under (-125). Parsons played a lot with Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith this preseason, which shows that Quinn is going to make sure Parsons is on the field in some capacity to make plays.
Parsons made 109 tackles and five sacks at Penn State in 2019, showing he’s clearly able to produce huge tackle numbers.
Tom Brady and the Bucs have one of the most lethal offenses in football, especially throwing the ball, which means Parsons may have to drop in coverage a little more often against tight ends like O.J. Howard and Rob Gronkowski.
However, if Vander Esch and Smith are also going to play major roles, they may spend more time in coverage with Parsons playing a jack-of-all trades role on defense.
I’ll take the over on Parsons prop for tackles in his NFL debut as the Bucs should force Dallas’ defense to spend a lot of time on the field in Week 1.
