Michigan Fans Will Hate the Line Movement Against Georgia
By Peter Dewey
The Michigan Wolverines and Jim Harbaugh finally got the monkey off their back and made the College Football Playoff after defeating Ohio State in Week 13 and then blowing out Iowa in the Big 10 title game on Saturday.
Michigan has run the ball with the best of them this season, and the Wolverines earned the No. 2 spot in the CFP from the selection committee. However, Vegas isn’t showing Harbaugh’s squad the same affection.
Michigan opened as a seven-point underdog against No. 3 Georgia and that line has since moved to the Bulldogs -8.0, signaling that the public is already all over the Bulldogs to end Michigan’s title hopes in the semifinals.
Here’s a look at the latest odds from WynnBET:
Georgia vs. Michigan Updated Odds, Spread and Total
Spread:
- Georgia -8.0 (-110) -- opened at -7.0
- Michigan +8.0 (-110) -- opened at +7.0
Moneyline:
- Georgia: -320
- Michigan: +245
Total:
- 43.0 (Over -110/Under -110)
It’s hard to argue with the line movement considering that Georgia’s historic defense is allowing just 9.8 points per game this season, but Bryce Young and Alabama did hang 41 on the Bulldogs on Saturday in the SEC title game.
With Georgia coming off its first loss of the year and Stetson Bennett looking beatable at quarterback, could Michigan pull off the upset as a major underdog?
It may be a little early to tell, but it’s going to come down to the running game for the Wolverines as they run the ball at the 18th highest rate in the country this season (59.76 percent). Georgia, on the other side, allows just 2.7 yards per rush this season (third in the country) and only 83.3 rushing yards per game.
If the Wolverines are going to match their 223.8 rushing yards per game this season, they’re going to need to control the line of scrimmage. I’m not sure if they’ll be able to, but it feels like Michigan is being a little disrespected in Vegas at the moment.
