Michigan State Given No Chance to Win Big Ten, and That's a Mistake

If you're just joining the Michigan State Spartans bandwagon, welcome to the party!

Turns out you might be here for a while before anyone from Vegas shows up.

Despite its No. 17 ranking and undefeated record in the latest AP Top 25 poll, Michigan State is all the way down at +3000 to win the Big Ten conference at WynnBET Sportsbook with five teams ranked ahead of them:

  • Ohio State: -140
  • Penn State: +450
  • Iowa: +550
  • Michigan: +700
  • Wisconsin: +1500
  • Michigan State: +3000
  • Indiana: +10000

The Spartans are 4-0 under second-year head coach Mel Tucker and are currently 2-0 in the Big Ten conference with a road win at Northwestern and a recent home win in overtime against Nebraska. They also have a dominant road win at No. 24 Miami, smoking the Hurricanes by 21.

Are those opponents world beaters this year? Not exactly, but Michigan State has already doubled their win total from a season ago, have a completely re-shaped roster thanks to several major additions from the transfer portal, and have a pretty clear path to an opportunity to play for the Big Ten championship game.

Here why bettors should consider jumping on Sparty purely as a futures bet value, despite letting them down last week by not covering against Nebraska.

Michigan State's Schedule is a Breeze Until Late

The Big Ten is full of talent this year, but relative to nearly every other team's remaining schedule, Michigan State has a cake walk up to mid-November.

This week, they host Western Kentucky at home as 10.5-point favorites at WynnBET before going on the road the following week at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights aren't the doormats of the previous several years, but the Spartans should be slight favorites even on the road.

Here's their remaining schedule after those two games:

  • Saturday 10/16 - Away at Indiana
  • Saturday 10/23 - NO GAME / BYE
  • Saturday 10/30 - Home vs. No. 14 Michigan
  • Saturday 11/6 - Away at Purdue
  • Saturday 11/13 - Home vs. Maryland
  • Saturday 11/20 - Away at No. 11 Ohio State
  • Saturday 11/27 - Home vs. No. 4 Penn State

If you have yet to notice a trend, their home games feature their most difficult challengers with the exception of the Ohio State game. Michigan State is more than capable of running the table until that game in Ohio, and even though both teams could be tied in the Big Ten standings, Ohio State is still a very vulnerable team this year, already losing once at home in Week 2.

Clearly, the oddsmakers don't expect the Spartans to either make it that far without a loss, or are chalking up their second-to-last game on the road to be their first of the year, likely eliminating them from the Big Ten championship game. It's an absolute challenge for Mel Tucker and his squad, but at 30/1 odds relative to the competition, the juice is worth the squeeze.
