The No. 11 Michigan State Spartans picked up their fifth consecutive win to start the season last week, defeating the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 48-31. Although they allowed 31 points (plus 489 passing yards and three touchdowns to Hilltoppers’ quarterback Bailey Zappe), the Spartans managed to score 48 points of its own. The Spartans offense continues to surprise in 2021.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights took a big loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 5, losing 52-13. After losing to the then-No.19 Michigan Wolverines, 20-13, Rutgers established themselves as one of the more stingy defenses of the Big Ten. It just didn’t show up last week.

A surprising offense versus a surprising defense. Which one will prevail?

Michigan State vs Rutgers Betting Trends

  • Michigan State is 3-0-2 against the spread this season.
  • Rutgers is 4-1 against the spread this season.

  • The under is 5-2 in the last two meetings between Rutgers and the Spartans.

Michigan State vs. Rutgers Prediction

Michigan State has seen a lot of production from running back Kenneth Walker III, and he should be getting many more touches in this game against Rutgers. The Scarlet Knight’s defense has allowed just 186.6 passing yards per game and should be able to hold Spartans’ quarterback Payton Thorne in check, though.

Here’s who Michigan State has played this season so you can decide if its 5-0 record is really that impressive or not.

Week 1: Northwestern (38-21 Win)

Week 2: Youngstown State (42-14 Win)

Week 3: Miami FL (38-17 Win)

Week 4: Nebraska (23-20 OT-Win)

Week 5: Western Kentucky (48-31 Win)

5-0 is only impressive if your schedule is.

I’m taking Rutgers at +180 on the moneyline to beat Michigan State in Piscataway, New Jersey.
