Michigan vs. UNLV Pick and Prediction
I hit the opening line of Michigan -14, but this one is trending in the other direction. That being said, I'm not deterred from my Wolverines bet.
Juwan Howard has been a decent bet off of a loss since taking over as head coach for Michigan in 2019, going 9-6 ATS, but I'm particularly interested in Friday night's spot given it was the team's first loss of the year and some questionable calls down the stretch. I believe the market is overreacting to a close loss and we are getting a very cheap price on a National Championship contender. The Wolverines had a double digit lead in the second half before squandering it to a physical Seton Hall team, but UNLV doesn't profile the same way.
The Rebs are much smaller than Michigan, lacking the requisite size to hang with big man Hunter Dickinson on the block. As for the perimeter, the Wolverines hit on just three of 15 three-point attempts in the loss, I think we see some positive regression on Friday night, especially considering this is inside the top third of the nation in KenPom's offensive efficiency metric.
Speaking of numbers evening out, Michigan is still due for some better free throw shooting. They hit on 83% of the freebies on Tuesday, but still are shooting below 61% as a team, I'll bank on that leveling out.
While UNLV is playing close to home and off to a 3-0 start, I think we are getting a market overreaction to one loss.
I like Michigan up to -15.
PICK: Michigan -12.5
