Shohei Ohtani UNDER 7.5 Strikeouts - Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston Astros

Conventional wisdom would be to look at Ohtani’s numbers, particularly at home this year and lean on the over for strikeouts. After all, he owns a 2.32 ERA at Angels Stadium this year, averaging just over 13 strikeouts per nine innings.

However, there’s two key aspects in play this evening that make me want to fade this number of 7.5.
The Astros are one of baseball’s most difficult teams to punch out this year; ranked third in baseball with a 19.9 strikeout percentage.

Maybe your counter to that is, “Ohtani has shoved vs Houston this year, racking up 33 strikeouts in just 16.2 innings.” You’d be correct. However, the forecast for today’s matchup is going to be absolutely sizzling in Anaheim; with 95 degrees at first pitch and the wind blowing out to right-field in the double digits. That’s a lot of energy spent by Ohtani to not only pitch, but also hit, run the bases, and do everything the modern-era Babe Ruth does. Plus, if anyone on Houston makes solid contact, the ball will go a long way.

I love Ohtani, and he still remains my AL MVP pick even though he won’t win. Today, however, I have to go under on this lopsided strikeout total. – Ben Heisler

Max Scherzer UNDER 7.5 Strikeouts – New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals

We all understand that Max Scherzer is amazing, but this may not be the spot you want to blindly back him. The Nationals don’t win many games, but they don’t strike out either. Washington is the third-hardest team to strike out in all of baseball. Scherzer has missed this line in two of his last four starts, and only cleared in one of the wins by one strikeout. He’s hovered around this line over the last month and I think Washington’s plate discipline will show itself today. Donnavan Smoot
