The "Dog Days of Summer" may have taken on a new meaning.

With less than two weeks until Major League Baseball's All Star Break from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, we're seeing moneyline underdogs off to a very strong start in the month of July.

Favorites are hovering just below 60% straight up on the 2022 MLB season, but this month, underdogs are covering at 54% straight up.

The records can be a bit deceiving, however. For example, the Miami Marlins are 39-40 on the season, but have won six consecutive games. Despite being seven wins under .500 when their streak got started, Miami has only gone 4-2 ATS, and have been the favorite in four of those six games.

Over the last three days, via Dave Tuley of VSiN, underdogs are 26-17 ATS entering Wednesday's action in the Majors. Going back to the start of the month, favorites are just 34-40 through five full days of baseball.

Here's how the records broke down through each day so far.

MLB Underdog Record in July (run line)

  • Friday, July 1: 7-7-0
  • Saturday, July 2: 7-10-0
  • Sunday, July 3: 9-6-0
  • Monday, July 4: 7-6-0
  • Tuesday, July 5: 10-5-0
  • Wednesday, July 6: TBD

Who are the Best Underdogs in Baseball this Year?

While only being underdogs five times this year, the New York Yankees remain baseball's best dog; going 4-1 as a moneyline underdog and winning at an 80% clip.

The Baltimore Orioles have the most wins on the season as a straight up dog, but are 32-42-0 this season when their opponent is favored. They lead the Arizona Diamondbacks by three games (32-29) for the most number of straight up wins as an underdog.
