MLB Playoff Predictions: Where Do Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays Stand?
By Peter Dewey
The Major League Baseball regular season is one its last legs, but the American League wild card race still has five teams in the mix.
The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics all could still earn one of the final two spots. To make things even more intriguing, the Yankees and Jays play a three-game set this week as do the A’s and Mariners.
Whew. We’re in for some serious playoff-level baseball down the stretch. And yes, there is a chance there is a five-way tie in the wild card standings.
Here’s how each team’s playoff odds look at FiveThirtyEight compared to their World Series odds over at WynnBET Sportsbook.
American League Wild Card Playoff Odds
- Boston Red Sox: 77% (+1200)
- New York Yankees: 75% (+1500)
- Toronto Blue Jays: 42% (+1500)
- Seattle Mariners: 5% (+7500)
- Oakland Athletics: Less than 1% (+20000)
I know my friend and BetSided editor Iain MacMillan will not like to see his Blue Jays so far behind the Yankees and Red Sox, especially since he’s called their rise throughout the second half of the season.
New York and Toronto begin their three-game series on Tuesday with Jameson Taillon scheduled to face Hyun Jin Ryu.
As for Boston, it faces a much easier road than the Yankees or Jays. New York has to face the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays in its final three games of the season, while Toronto faces the lowly Baltimore Orioles. Boston is even better off, with three games against Baltimore and three against the Washington Nationals.
New York’s sweep of the Red Sox this past weekend was huge for their playoff chances, as it is in sole possession of the top spot in the American League wild card. However, if the Jays can take care of the Yankees at home, then there’s a chance New York will need to win against Tampa Bay and get some help to make the playoff field.
