There is only one Division Series matchup left in the Major League Baseball playoffs, as the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres all advanced to the Championship Series with wins on Saturday.

The Phillies and Padres, both wild card teams, shockingly knocked off the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League, and one more team is looking to pull off an upset on Sunday to close out an ALDS series.

The Cleveland Guardians rallied from two down in the ninth inning on Saturday to beat the New York Yankees 6-5 and take a 2-1 series lead. Now, Cleveland has another home game in Game 4 with a chance to ice the series.

The Yankees allowed 15 hits in Saturday’s loss, and the team’s bullpen has been taxed in a major way the last few games with Wandy Peralta and Jonathan Loaisiga pitching in all three games of the series.

New York turns to ace Gerrit Cole in this game, as he will rematch with Cal Quantrill, who also pitched in Game 1. Here’s a look at the probable pitchers for this game and how they should match up.

New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians Probable Pitchers

  • Yankees: Gerrit Cole (13-8, 3.50 ERA)
  • Guardians: Cal Quantrill (15-5, 3.38 ERA)

Even though their backs are against the wall, there’s nobody the Yankees would rather have on the mound in this game than Cole.

The Yankees ace threw 6.1 innings of one-run ball in Game 1, striking out eight batters, to lead New York to a 4-2 win. Quantrill, who pitched five innings of one-run to begin Game 1, fell apart in the sixth inning.

He ended the day allowing four runs, three earned, in five innings of work in the loss.

The Guardians certainly have the edge in the bullpen over New York, and it’s possible Terry Francona turns to his relievers earlier than he did in Game 1 with a chance to win the series tonight.

Cole and Quantrill have both been solid this season, with Quantrill posting a 2.32 ERA over his final nine starts of the regular season.

Cole has allowed a home run in nine consecutive outings, so Yankees fans are hoping all he gives up is a solo in this matchup if New York wants to advance to a winner-take-all Game 5.
