There’s just one game in the Major League Baseball playoffs on Sunday, as three of the four wild card round series were wrapped up in just two games.

The Cleveland Guardians, Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies all made quick work of their opponents in the wild card round, and Seattle and Philadelphia both gave us upsets that postseason baseball is so famous for.

Now, the San Diego Padres are looking to pull off an upset of their own in the third and final game of their series against the New York Mets.

New York rebounded with a 7-3 win in Game 2 on Saturday, riding a strong start by Jacob deGrom to a victory. The Mets blew the NL East division late in the 2022 regular season, so a win on Sunday would at least give the team (and its fans) the peace of mind that it made the divisional round despite the collapse.

Let’s jump into the starting pitchers for today’s matchup between the Padres and Mets:

San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets Probable Pitchers for Game 3

  • Padres: Joe Musgrove (10-7, 2.93 ERA)
  • Mets: Chris Bassitt (15-9, 3.42 ERA)

This is an interesting pitching matchup, as Musgrove was an All-Star in the 2022 season and Bassitt has pitched well for the Mets with a 3.42 ERA on the season.

Musgrove made just one start against the Mets back on July 24, allowing four earned runs on five hits. The Padres came up short in that matchup. Bassitt made two starts against the Padres, giving up seven earned runs in 3.1 innings in his first outing. The veteran right-hander rebounded in his second performance against San Diego tossing seven innings of two-run ball and striking out 11.

The Mets went 20-10 in Bassitt’s 30 starts this season. San Diego was almost as good with Musgrove on the mound, going 19-11 in his 30 outings.
