It is a very light slate in the MLB today. Even the baseball players are excited for the NFL to be back, but if you don’t like the Rams as a home dog tonight, maybe I could interest you in my MLB Underdog of the Day.

I can’t offer Matthew Stafford, but I do have a pitcher who is playing a lot like him right now. When he’s great he might be the best in the league, but when it’s bad it gets really bad. Except he’s on a team a lot more like the Detroit Lions than the Los Angeles Rams right now.

Sandy Alcantara is yo-yoing right now and that is not what anyone expected from the guy who has been dominating the National League this season and who is a huge favorite to win the NL Cy Young. For his last seven starts he has alternated between being a real problem for the Marlins and an even bigger problem for hitters.

Last time out he gave up six earned runs over five innings. The start before that, nine innings one run allowed and 10 Ks. The time before that, 3.2 innings and six earned runs. Get the picture?

Well honestly I am jumping on this see-saw and hoping I can catch it on an upswing. He is too good of a pitcher for him to keep struggling every time he takes the mound. We have seen some of his advanced numbers dropping a bit, for example the run value on his changeup is no longer one of the best of any pitch in the league. That doesn’t mean it isn’t good and that he isn’t a value as an underdog against Philly and Kyle Gibson today.

Anytime you can get the Cy Young favorite at plus odds I think you just have to take it.
