MLB Underdog of the Day (Fade Twins in Sonny Gray's Return to Action from IL Stint)
By Matt De Saro
The Minnesota Twins and Joe Ryan let us down last night as my underdog pick for Tuesday, but I’m going back to the well with this series. The difference is that tonight I will be focused on the Seattle Mariners as underdogs in Game 3 of this series.
Logan Gilbert was magic last night and I think that Marco Gonzales has a chance to give the Seattle Mariners a 2-1 victory in this mid-week series.
Here are the odds for this showdown from WynnBET Sportsbook:
Twins vs. Mariners Odds, Run Line and Total
Run Line
- Twins: +1.5 (-215)
- Mariners: -1.5 (+175)
Moneyline:
- Twins: -145
- Mariners: +130
Total:
- Total 7 (Over -115/Under -105)
Best MLB Underdog Pick Today
Gonzales will be making his 13th start of the year for Seattle and second against the Twins. The veteran lefty has a decent 3.63 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.
In one game against the Twins this year, Gonzales pitched two innings in relief during his season debut. He allowed three home runs in that game and I’m hoping it is well behind him.
Since then, Gonzales is still having issues with the long ball but overall looks very good. While this is not a glowing review, I think Gonzales is pitching better as we enter the summer months. The long ball is my biggest worry here but the Twins are an average power-hitting team and I think Gonzales can avoid too much trouble on that front.
Minnesota welcomes back Sonny Gray to the rotation today after a stint on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain. As much as I like Gray, I think he and the Twins are a good fade target in his return.
In seven starts, Gray has a 3.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 33 ⅔ innings. But, Gray’s strength of schedule has been tragically low and he’s beating up on very bad teams. Gray’s ERA in May was a stunning 1.65. However, he played against the Royals, Tigers, Guardians and A’s twice in that span.
While I am a fan of Gray, and I think the Twins are better overall, I don’t like either in this spot coming off a loss last night.
Pick: Mariners +130 ML
