Two of the worst teams in the National League go head to head today when the Cincinnati Reds host the Washington Nationals in Game 3 of their four-game series. The pair split the first two games with the Reds winning on Friday night 8-5. Both teams are in last place in their respective divisions and have little to no hope of climbing out of the basement. Somebody has to win tonight, and I have a good feeling I’m on the right side of this game.

Nationals vs. Reds Prediction and Pick

For as bad as these teams are, today’s pitching matchup might be better than many expect. The Nationals will give Erick Fedde his 10th start of the season after going 3-4 with a 4.60 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 47 innings pitched. While his numbers are okay, Fedde did get knocked around on Monday by the Mets. He lasted just 1 ⅓ inning in a 13-5 blowout in which he gave up six earned runs. It was one of the worst starts I’ve seen in weeks from anyone. But, aside from that disaster, Fedde was great in May. I’m willing to overlook the last game against a very good Mets game and chalk it up as a “bad day.”

The Reds will send Tyler Mahle to the hill today at 2-5 with a 5.53 ERA and 1.3 WHIP. While his stats don’t inspire a ton of hope, he carried a shutout into the seventh inning on Sunday against the Giants. Mahle finished the day with a one-hitter over 6 ⅔ innings with eight strikeouts and three walks.

It’s hard to give an edge to either team on the mound with these two quite evenly matched. However, the Nationals are 2-5 in their last seven games and have taken over as the worst team in the NL according to me. They are 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games and 5-13 coming off an outright win.

Pick: Reds ML -122
