NBA Draft Odds: Potential Collin Sexton Trade Could Shake Up No. 3 Pick
By Peter Dewey
Could the Cleveland Cavaliers shake up the 2021 NBA Draft by making a trade this offseason?
It appears that Cleveland is willing to trade guard Collin Sexton, who will be entering the final year of his rookie deal, in order to better build its roster.
The Cavs already lucked out in the lottery and received the No. 3 pick in the draft, and a Sexton trade could net them another first-round pick or young asset. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the New York Knicks, who hold the No. 19 and No. 21 picks in the draft, are currently the “most aggressive” team in the Sexton market.
“The Knicks are the most aggressive trade suitor for Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton, sources said,” Charania wrote. “Sexton is eligible for his rookie extension this offseason, and with one year left on his deal, it allows Cleveland to continue to be patient in constructing the roster.”
With G League guard Jalen Green now predicted to go No. 2 to the Houston Rockets, WynnBET has the Cavs taking University of Southern California big man Evan Mobley with the No. 3 overall pick at -140 odds. Green (+120) and Gonzaga University point guard Jalen Suggs (+150) are the next two players on the odds list at No. 3.
However, if Sexton is dealt, would the Cavs consider taking Suggs at No. 3 and drafting a forward or big man later in the draft? In the case of a deal with the Knicks, it appears that Cleveland would want one of New York ‘s first-rounders in return for Sexton.
That certainly makes things interesting for the Cavs, as they also have to worry about re-signing restricted free agent center Jarrett Allen this offseason. If Allen isn't brought back, then Mobley is likely a guarantee at No. 3 if he’s there.
However, Suggs was one of the most impressive college prospects this year, and the Cavs could look to pair him with Darius Garland in the backcourt if Sexton is gone.
The trio wouldn’t make much sense, but if Cleveland improves its wing or forward depth in the trade, Suggs may be the best fit available at No. 3. He could be an intriguing bet at +150 odds to go to Cleveland.
Clearly, the Cavs have to make a deal first before they evaluate their needs, but the fact that Sexton is on the table tells me that Cleveland may like Suggs or Green more than Mobley in this year’s draft.
