Evaluating teams, especially when it comes to sports betting, is about more than just their win-loss record. If you really want to dive into how well a team is truly performing, net yards per play is a good spot to start.

Net yards per play is a simple calculation that shows how good a team is at moving the ball down the field while preventing the other team to do so. All you do is take the average amount of yards gained per play on offense and subtract the yards given up per play on defense. The number you're left with, is net yards per play.

It is important to note that there's more things to look at than simply net yards per play. For example, this stat doesn't show how efficient a team is on third down, or how they perform in the red zone. Ultimately, it's a great jumping off point to begin your NFL handicapping process.

At the conclusion of Week 10, let's take a look at the latest standings in net yards per play.

Bills Remain Top of Standings

The Bills have now lost two-straight games, falling to the New York Jets in Week 10, and then blowing a two score lead to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11. Many are acting like the sky is falling in Buffalo, when in fact, they statistically remain the best team in the NFL.

Teams go on bad stretches every single year. Eventual Super Bowl champions fall it times as well. So, let's not start acting like the Bills are frauds. They're for real this season, even though they've had two back-to-back losses.

They're 9.5-point favorites against the Bills in Week 11 in what should be a bounce back spot.

Colts Take Major Leap Under Jeff Saturday

Jeff Saturday gets hired as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, they upset the Raiders, and now all of a sudden they take a massive leap in the net yards per play standings, jumping from 19th to 14th in the NFL.

Do they still have life in the AFC South? Maybe. Maybe not. But, their numbers against the Raiders seem promising if they can keep things up. They have a tall order in front of them in Week 11, taking on the top team in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles, as 7.5-point underdogs.

Miami Officially a Legitimate Contender

In case you had any doubts before, the Miami Dolphins are now officially Super Bowl contenders. After a dominant Week 10 performance against the Browns, the Dolphins have catapulted into the top five of the net yards per play standings.

The latest standings have them behind only the Bills and Chiefs in the AFC, firmly in the third best spot in AFC. After the Buffalo loss to the Vikings, the Dolphins now lead the AFC East, and have a chance to host at least one playoff game if their success continues.

Their defense has been lacking at times, but their potent offense is good enough to nullify any issues on the other side of the ball. Week 11 will serve as their BYE week.
