The Washington Football Team and the New England Patriots will play their opening matchup of the preseason this Thursday in Foxborough.

Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera revealed that Ryan Fitzpatrick and Washington’s starters will play in Thursday’s game, although he didn’t commit to how much time they’d appear in action.

The Patriots will begin their quarterback battle, even though Bill Belichick has been insistent that Cam Newton is the starter, as rookie Mac Jones will likely get his first shot at NFL action.

Jones’ Rookie of the Year odds have been on the rise, so we will see if the hype is real when he takes the field in the matchup.

Washington vs. Patriots Betting Trends

Washington and New England were two of the best under teams in the NFL last season. In Washington’s games, the under hit 11 times in 17 games (one playoff) and the Patriots hit the under in 11 of their 16 regular season matchups.

Here are a few more trends ahead of Thursday’s matchup:

  • Washington was 10-7 against the spread last season
  • New England was 7-9 against the spread in 2020
  • Bill Belichick’s teams are just 25-31-4 against the spread in the preseason in his career

Patriots vs. Washington Prediction and Pick

Both Washington and New England struggled to score last season, but with Fitzpatrick under center, the Football Team could take a step forward from last season where it finished bottom five in the league in yardage.

Still, I think the under is the pick here, given the fact that the Patriots could rotate quarterbacks often in this one. Belichick has never been one to worry about preseason wins, as his record suggests, so the Pats likely won’t be hunting a big number in this one.

I’ll take Washington to cover the two-point spread in the first look at the Fitzpatrick era.
