Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson both won the NFL’s MVP award in the second season in the NFL, making the ultra-quick rise to stardom.

Is Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert next?

According to the oddsmakers at WynnBET, Herbert has a pretty good chance of joining that club in the 2021 season.

After opening with +2000 odds to win the league’s MVP award, which was good for 10th on the odds list, Herbert has surged into second (behind Mahomes at +650) at +1000 odds to be the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Herbert has jumped some major names, including Josh Allen (+1100), Aaron Rodgers (+1100), Tom Brady (+1200), Jackson (+1500) and Matthew Stafford (+1500) with the move. WynnBET's Trading Manager Alan Berg exclusively spoke to BetSided about Herbert's eye-opening rise up the board.

“Herbert was amazing in his rookie season," Berg said. "His offensive line struggled to protect him, and the running game was absent. Yet, he still had the most passing touchdowns ever by a rookie.

"I was never a fan of Anthony Lynn’s coaching, so new head coach Brandon Staley won’t need to make many adjustments for Herbert to continue excelling. Once we took one sizable bet at 20/1, that was enough for me to cut him even more.”

He and the Los Angeles Chargers are expected to have one of the league’s best passing offenses, as Herbert is seventh on the odds list to lead the NFL in passing yards this coming season. Not only that, but the Chargers are ninth on the odds list to be the league’s highest-scoring offense.

The Herbert hype is real, and it should be after his extremely impressive rookie season. In 2020, Herbert started 15 games and threw for 4,336 yards (sixth in the NFL), 31 touchdowns (10th) and only 10 interceptions.

He showed extreme poise and ability for a rookie, and there seems to be a growing sense in Vegas that he should improve in 2021.

The Chargers are expected to have a solid year under new head coach Brandon Staley, as they’re projected to win 9.5 games with the over (+115) as the underdog to the under (-135).

While Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will likely dominate the AFC West, Herbert certainly is a name to watch as a breakout candidate in his sophomore season.
