Syracuse had their undefeated season hopes dashed on the road against Clemson, but not without a tough fight, holding a double digit second half lead against the vaunted Tigers in Death Valley.

Will the Orange get off the mat on Saturday back at home against Notre Dame? The Irish have underwhelmed this season, but not when they are underdogs.

Can they catch a Syracuse team reeling off their first loss of the season? Let's break down the odds and find the best bet:

Notre Dame vs. Syracuse Odds, Spread and Total

Notre Dame vs. Syracuse Betting Trends

  • Syracuse is 6-1 against the spread (ATS)
  • Notre Dame is 2-0 ATS as an underdog this season
  • Both teams are 2-5 to the OVER this season

Notre Dame vs. Syracuse Prediction and Pick

There is rightful concern about backing the Orange after such a deflating loss to Clemson, but I can't trust Notre Dame to take advantage of a soft Syracuse run defense.

In the loss to Clemson, Syracuse's rush D was a target for the opposition. Clemson ran for 293 yards in the win on nearly five yards per carry. Dino Babers' team was somewhat lucky to be in the game, taking a 90-plus yard fumble recovery to the house for a touchdown and generating three other turnovers in the losing effort.

However, Syracuse was expected to lose by double digits in that one, closing as a 14-point underdog, the team held up nicely all things considered and I believe their suspect run defense won't be exploited this weekend. Notre Dame is outside the top 100 in EPA/Rush, a far more ineffective offense than Clemson.

Meanwhile, the Irish have a suspect defense of their own, 99th in EPA/Rush and 106th in defensive success rate. This has been a team that has underwhelmed all season long, and I trust the Syracuse offense to get more from the likes of running back Sean Tucker and quarterback Garrett Shrader to win by a field goal or more.
