Let’s Set Odds on Who Will Be the First NFL Coach Fired
By Ben Heisler
We're three games into the 2021 NFL season and already the chopping block rumors are out!
Fans, talk show hosts, and analysts alike are out with their pitchforks and torches ready to punt their current head coach directly into the sun; already seeing enough to know what the end result will be.
While WynnBET does not offer odds for "Which Coach Will Be Fired First?" we can have some fun playing the role of the oddsmakers and use several other available future bets like win total projections, along with divisional and Super Bowl odds, to set the board.
Here are six names worth keeping an eye on that could get the early axe.

Joe Judge - New York Giants
(Hypothetical) Odds to Be Fired: +400
Judge's Giants are 0-3 to start the season, with two blown opportunities to take home a win in their last two games. The former New England Patriots' special teams coach demanded accountability when he first took over, but there has been little to show for it despite a very winnable division.
New York owns the third-largest odds to win the Super Bowl at WynnBET at +15000, and find themselves projected for just six wins right now on the season, with the under as the overwhelming favorite at -125.
New York tends to wait until the end of the year to let go of coaches, but they did get rid of Ben McAdoo with four games to go in 2017, so there is precedent to make a mid-season move if they choose to do so.
Daniel Jones' improvement may actually keep Judge around longer than he may deserve. In a crucial third year, Jones has yet to throw an interception and has been extremely productive as a running quarterback with 161 yards on the ground and two touchdowns over the first three games. Only Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts have more.
Mike Zimmer - Minnesota Vikings
(Hypothetical) Odds to Be Fired: +550
Zimmer's seat may be safe for now after the Vikings pulled off a surprising home win over Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.
The Vikings' updated win total is now at 8 wins at WynnBET, with the over a clear favorite at -135.
The Vikings are an overtime loss and a missed field goal away from being undefeated and at the top of the NFC North standings. Some may say that's reflective of an unlucky team bound to improve, but the Vikings have also made numerous mistakes that are indicative of poor coaching.
Zimmer's defense, what was considered his strength as a longtime successful coordinator, has only shown up for one half of play when they held Seattle scoreless in the second half.
Matt Nagy - Chicago Bears
(Hypothetical) Odds to Be Fired: +600
The Bears' head coach is running out of excuses after his teams have continued to regress from his 12-4 rookie season in 2018.
First it was Mitchell Trubisky not taking the next step in his offense. Then it was Nick Foles can't play anymore. Now, after watching Justin Fields be set up to fail in his first career start, Nagy's seat is lava-hot in Chicago.
My friend Laurence Holmes of 670 The Score in Chicago summed it up best, calling Nagy's play-calling unimaginative and cowardly:
"He trotted out the Andy Dalton playbook for Justin Fields... and it's not a surprise. We have seen Matt Nagy do things that seem inexplicable and this was an inexplicable game plan that he asked that young man to go out and execute."
There are plenty of reasons why Nagy should be higher on this list, but if we're actually attempting to set odds here, you have to take Bears ownership into consideration. They've NEVER fired a coach in-season, refused to acknowledge whether or not Nagy and GM Ryan Pace are on the final year of their contract, and have given them carte blanche to continue to operate the team despite mistakes that traditionally cost coaches and executives their jobs.
Vegas believes in Justin Fields, placing him as early as second amongst NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year contenders at WynnBET, but he's since fallen to a tie for fifth with Steelers running back Najee Harris.
Chicago's win total is now all the way down to 6 games. The Bears were expected by management to make it to the playoffs, but the oddsmakers know it's a pipe dream now.
Urban Meyer - Jacksonville Jaguars
(Hypothetical) Odds to Be Fired/Step Down: +800
The Jaguars are 0-3 and have looked lost in nearly every game this season. But with the big name splash that was bringing in Meyer in the first place, ownership won't want that embarrassment and P.R. nightmare early on.
Trevor Lawrence was the consensus top pick for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Now, his odds are floundering down to +700 as Jacksonville is in contention for the largest Super Bowl odds in the NFL at +100000.
Meyer continues to be rumored to the Southern California opening, which makes sense considering his college coaching success and opportune timing to jump ship whenever things aren't going well. I don't see any way he gets canned mid-season, but as long as USC stays open, his name will be involved.
Mike McCarthy - Dallas Cowboys
Odds to Be Fired or Step Down: +1800
Fire the head coach of a first place NFC East team? Are you crazy?
Let's take a collective step back and ask ourselves a very real question. Are the Cowboys winning because of Mike McCarthy? Or in spite of McCarthy?
Dak Prescott returning from a severe ankle injury is a major boost, and Dan Quinn has helped the defensive turnaround on that side of the ball.
Plus, when Peyton Manning calls out your coaching ability and lack of time management skills on national television, it's going to create a lot of conversation that doesn't favor McCarthy.
Even with the Cowboys win total above double digits at WynnBET, McCarthy's mistakes are amplified because Dallas is always on in featured games. If they start to cost them games, it could be a quicker hook than most may anticipate.
Kliff Kingsbury - Arizona Cardinals
Odds to Be Fired or Step Down: +2500
"The Cardinals are 3-0 in the best division in the NFC! Kyler Murray has the second-best odds to win MVP (+600) at WynnBET! What are you smoking, Benny?"
Again, let's all collectively take a step back and see what we have in front of us.
Arizona played the Titans, a team that can't stop anyone on defense, got a missed chip-shot field goal to defeat the Vikings at home, and then took care of business against Jacksonville on the road.
The next three games get very tough: at the Rams, home vs. the 49ers, and at the Browns. If the Cardinals lose three straight, are we starting to have this conversation? I think so.
Kingsbury can't afford the mistakes the Cardinals are getting away with through the first three games to continue if they want to enter Week 7 with a winning record. If they start to tailspin, it's very conceivable that GM Steve Keim interjects with defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who has previous head coaching experience with the Denver Broncos.
