Odds of Deshaun Watson Getting Traded to Dolphins Just Went Up
Texans Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson hasn't played a game this year amidst his trade demands and disturbing sexual assault allegations that could potentially lead to legal issues and a league suspension.
Yet, despite the storm cloud hovering over him, Watson remains a top trade target for any quarterback-needy team in the NFL purely on ability alone.
One team that likely needs a long-term starting quarterback is the Miami Dolphins. Sure, they have Tua Tagovailoa, but as he proved in their loss vs. the lowly Jaguars Sunday, even when he's healthy, which isn't often, he isn't an elite quarterback that can will his team to a win.
This is probably where you say to me, "Hey Brian, he actually looked pretty good on Sunday. Tua completed over 70% of his passes for 329 yards, 2 TDs, and one interception."
This is all accurate information. However, if you watched the game, you know a lot of those were short passes that receivers did a good job of turning into bigger gains. Even more concerning was when Tua did throw the long ball, it floated and it was clear his arm is not as strong as what you look for in top quarterbacks.
Oh, and did you see his interception? It was atrocious.
The footwork fundamentals, decision making and fluttering, flimsy throw are a microcosm of what I saw from Tagovailoa throughout the game. He simply doesn't have the arm strength you need in an elite quarterback. Throw in his injury history and that's not the man I want leading my team.
A quarterback with the talent of Watson only comes along so often. If the Dolphins want to go all-in on winning a Super Bowl the next five years, the first step is getting their quarterback situation settled. The best player available to do so is Watson. It still would reportedly take a king's ransom, but it would be worth it to secure their long-term quarterback because Tagovailoa isn't the answer.
