Let’s Set Odds: Where Will Jacob deGrom Sign in Free Agency?

Jacob deGrom is the most dominant pitcher in the sport. Well when he’s actually on the mound. The problem is he has been dealing with injuries for much of the past two seasons.

That will make his free agency even more interesting this offseason. A dominant 34-year-old starting pitcher with injury concerns could still easily command $40 million a year, but how many years will be the question.

However, our big question is how many teams will be involved. There are only so many franchises willing to throw around that kind of money, so let’s set odds for Jacob deGrom’s landing spot this offseason.

Odds for What Team Will Sign Jacob deGrom

  • New York Mets -200
  • Los Angeles Dodgers +400
  • San Francisco Giants +600
  • The Field +750

New York Mets -200

You really think that Steve Cohen is going to let Jacob deGrom walk? Because I certainly do not. Cohen has been willing to pay a serious premium in free-agency and he won’t be shy trying to keep his ace in place. The Mets had a disappointing end to the season, so I think it will be hard for one of the league's richest owners to justify going into next season with a worse roster.

Los Angeles Dodgers +400

Anytime there is a high-priced free agent, especially a pitcher, I feel like the Dodgers must be included in the conversation. They have the money to spend whenever they want to and might be interested in a dominant right-handed starting pitcher joining their staff. Walker Buehler should be returning next season, but they might try to snatch up deGrom anyways.

San Francisco Giants +600

I just get the feeling that San Francisco is antsy to make a big splash in free agency. They have been a middling team for a few years now and there are rumors that they could be going after Aaron Judge. The New York Yankees and a few others should be in the conversation for this third spot, but I’m going with the Giants attempting to add to the top of their rotation.

The Field +750

The Yankees might be interested in paying deGrom $40 million a year to ride the subway from Queens to the Bronx. The Braves are also in play, but they just handed Spencer Strider a lot of money to be their dominant right-handed pitcher at the top of their rotation. Maybe there is even a wild card team that could come out of nowhere to nab deGrom, but I don’t see it yet.
