Let's Set Odds: Who Could Trade for DK Metcalf This Offseason?
By Matt De Saro
Whenever I hear an executive or coach claim that a player is “100% not available," I hear something different. I hear what amounts to that individual challenging the league to make a ridiculous offer and change their mind.
Basically, overpay us and maybe we will let that player go. This is how I feel about the DK Metcalf situation in Seattle. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, several league executives agree.
The Seahawks have said that they have no plans to make a deal on DK Metcalf this offseason. However, Pete Carroll has already said that they have not gotten to talking to Metcalk about a contract extension, according to the Seattle Times. It is beginning to feel like while Seattle wants to retain Metcalf’s services, there are a lot of question marks as to whether it will.
The Seahawks are a team in the middle of a massive transition. Metcalf would be a great piece to build a new team around, but the Seahawks have a lot of gaps that need filling. Unloading Metcalf would presumably give Seattle more flexibility to address these other needs.
The Seahawks could be tempted to test the waters after the wide receiver market exploded this offseason. Tyreek Hill set a new gold standard for wide receiver contracts at $30 million in annual average salary, while Davante Adams and Mike Williams signed massive deals of their own. I think this has Seattle second-guessing its decision to hold on to Metcalk no matter what.
So, which teams would be ideal landing spots for Metcalf should this prove to be the case? Which teams could even put together a good enough package for Seattle to consider? I have two worthy candidates to make a run at Metcalf.
And I have set some of my own odds for fun on their chances to pull off such a trade.
New York Jets +300
I think that if the Seahawks decide to explore trade options, the Jets have to be the most likely spot for him to end up. New York has the two most important qualities for this move to make sense. A need for Metcalf, and the ability to put together a package good enough to trade for him.
The Jets have a lot of solid draft picks to barter with this year, including the 10th and 38th picks. The move would also make up for losing out on Tyreek Hill and get them a superstar receiver that the Jets desperately need.
Green Bay Packers +600
Now that the Packers have re-signed Aaron Rodgers and traded away Davante Adams, they are in a bit of a pickle. They have a glaring weakness at the wide receiver position after trading Adams and losing Marquez Valdes-Scantling to free agency.
Considering they just spend a boatload to keep Rodgers around, this is a pretty silly problem to have. But, a guy like Metcalf could make the Packers look like geniuses if they manage to pull off this trade. The Packers have the multiple firsts and multiple seconds this season to try and tempt Seattle to make a deal.
