Serena Williams officially announced today that she wouldn’t be competing in the Australian Open that takes place in just about a month. 

"While this is never an easy decision to make, I am not where I need to be physically to compete," Williams told the official Australian Open website. "Melbourne is one of my favorite cities to visit and I look forward to playing at the (Open) every year. I will miss seeing the fans, but am excited to return and compete at my highest level.”

With Williams not playing in the first major of the year, one question comes to mind: Will she ever win another major. Williams has 23 grand slams to her name, but the elusive 24th that would tie her with Margaret Court for the most all-time has eluded her since 2017.

Williams Will Win Another Major

Although it’s taking her longer to recover, Williams is still able to be productive when she’s on the court. She’s made it to the semi-finals in two of the last four majors she’s competed in. Williams can still play tennis at a high level. Maybe this time away from the game is what she needs to get her body right for one full run to a title. 

We’ve seen greats in other sports, most recently Tiger Woods at the 2019 Masters, pull themselves together for one more run to win a title. If health is the true issue, then it is possible she has one more left in her. While she’s great, it’s hard to bet on a 40-year old who is starting to look injury prone. 

Williams Will Not Win Another Major

Being 40-years old, missing the two tournaments and having to retire from the one prior is not what you’d want to see to inspire hope. Williams hasn’t won a major since 2017 and hasn’t been to a major final since 2019. We’ve seen other greats of the sport, Roger Federer admit the “end is near.” We could possibly be watching the end of their careers right before our eyes. 

Williams has a lot to overcome in the later stages of her career. If she can’t get on the court, it might be time to hang the racket up.
