Oddsmakers Don't Expect Teddy Bridgewater to Put Broncos over the Top

Teddy “Two Gloves” Bridgewater was named the starter for the Denver Broncos yesterday and while bettors and fans alike rejoiced, the oddsmakers are still showing doubt in his ability to lead a team.

WynnBET still has the Broncos projected to miss the playoffs, with -175 odds to miss and +145 odds to make it. Denver hasn’t made the playoffs since it won the Super Bowl in 2016, and this season seems it will play out in similar fashion.

Bridgewater started 15 games last season, throwing for 3,733 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He led the Carolina Panthers to a 4-11 record in those games. The Panthers were without Christian McCaffrey for most of the season, making life difficult, but the dynamic in the division is similar to what Denver will face this season.

The Panthers were the third-best team in the NFC South, and the Broncos are projected to finish third in the AFC West. With the Kansas City Chiefs heavily favored to win the division, Denver is expected to fall behind the Los Angeles Chargers for the second spot in the divisional standings.

If the Broncos were to make the playoffs, it would likely be via the wild card spot. Although their odds to make the playoffs aren’t in their favor, their win total projection is a spot of optimism. Denver’s line is set at 8.5 wins, with the over (-140) favored against the under (+120). Denver is going to be in a fight for the last wild card spot, but hitting the over hard on 8.5 wins could help the Broncos break their playoff streak.

Denver knows what it’s getting with Bridgewater. He’s going to be the safe option, as opposed to the more unpredictable Drew Lock, and not lose the game because of stupid mistakes. For the Broncos who’ve been looking for a quarterback for the majority of John Elway’s tenure, Bridgewater is just what they’ve been looking for -- even if Vegas doesn’t think so.
