Oddsmakers Predicting Cavaliers Take Another Guard With No. 3 Overall Pick
By Peter Dewey
The NBA draft lottery has given the Cleveland Cavaliers plenty of great selections, and the Cavs will have another top-three pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
Cleveland is sitting in the No. 3 spot and is in line to get one of the draft’s top four players in Jalen Suggs, Jalen Green, Cade Cunningham or Evan Mobley.
The Cavs have used their last two first-round selections on guard Darius Garland (2019) and wing Isaac Okoro (2020). Cleveland’s roster doesn’t have many strengths, but guards Collin Sexton and Garland are probably the main two.
However, WynnBET sees the Cavs once again adding to their backcourt in the 2021 draft. Cleveland is favored to select Green, a shooting guard who played in the G League last season, at -105 odds.
Suggs, another guard, is second on the odds list for the No. 3 overall pick at +125 odds. While it’s possible that Mobley makes more sense as he is a big man, he is projected to go No. 2 overall based on WynnBET’s odds.
Green had a solid season in the G League last year, as he averaged 17.9 points per game and shot 46.1 percent from the field. He seems like the more logical pick if the Cavs decide to keep their current core together, as he could play alongside Sexton and Garland in a small-ball lineup.
Suggs is more of a traditional point guard while Green is a pure scorer, but if the Cavs take either one, it’s possible that Sexton or Garland could be on their way out.
Sexton averaged 24.3 points per game last season, but the Cavs haven’t been able to win with him as their No. 1 option. If Cleveland truly wants to jump start it’s rebuild, it could move on from Sexton or Garland to get a haul or players/assets to build around the No. 3 pick in the draft.
Both Green and Suggs are solid young players, but until the Cavs can figure out their roster, it’s hard to see them fitting alongside both Sexton and Garland in the backcourt in the long term.
