Oregon State vs. Cal Prediction and Odds: Back Golden Bears at Home

We have some early season PAC-12 action on Thursday night with Cal playing host to Oregon State in Berkley.

After having some COVID-19 issues on the roster early in the year, Cal has gotten on track recently, covering in five straight.

Meanwhile, Oregon State is having a bit of a hangover after last season's Elite Eight run, starting 1-6 with their lone win coming at home against lowly Portland State.

Oregon State is better than their 1-6 record, ShotQuality has their adjusted record at 3-3 and has them rated above Cal, but I still can't back them in this particular matchup.

For starters, neither team takes three-point shots, both bottom 50 in three-point rate, but allow a ton of three-point shots on the defensive end, each in the bottom third. So, which team can adjust? Cal has shot better from the outside, but I trust their interior offense more with a pair of 6'9" bigs in Grant Anticevich and Andre Kelly. Not to mention, Charlotte transfer guard Jordan Shepherd has done a great job running the point for the Golden Bears.

With Anticevich and Kelly inside, I see them causing issues for an Oregon State offense that is hyper reliant on interior scoring. Not to mention, we saw this Golden Bears team nearly upset Seton Hall last week, a team with a ton of length similar to the Beavers. While Oregon State's zone defense is unique, Cal has seen it in conference play a ton so I expect them to have a sound offensive game plan and to get to the window here.

Even when adjusting for some regression on the way from Oregon State, I still make Cal closer to -4, so at anything under -3.5 I'll be on the Golden Bears to give the Beavers a seventh straight loss.
