The defending champs start their National Championship defense against a familiar face.

Georgia football broke through as champions in 2022, but now face the difficult task of doing it again. The team opens its season in Atlanta against No. 11 Oregon, who hired Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Lanning as their new head coach.

The Ducks have some new faces in key places, such as Auburn transfer Bo Nix as the new starting QB. He'll need to be acclimated quickly because the Bulldogs have retooled on the defensive side of the ball with a ton of talent despite losing nine draft picks.

Here are the odds for this top 15 matchup in Week 1:

Oregon vs. Georgia Odds, Spread and Total

Oregon vs. Georgia Betting Trends

  • Georgia is 15-12 against the spread (ATS) and 24-2 straight up (SU) under Kirby Smart
  • Georgia beat Auburn all three times Bo Nix was the starting quarterback by a combined score of 84-30. Auburn didn't score more than 14 points in any of the three games

Oregon vs. Georgia Prediction and Pick

While there may be some questions about Georgia's ability to not just replace their DC Lanning, who is now on the other sideline, and their nine draft picks, this is not a rebuilding UGA D, this is a retool.

The team still has plenty of first round prospects such as Jalen Carter, and I think the offense should take a step forward to make up for some growing pains on the defense. Stetson Bennett is back under center and surrounded by emerging talents at wide receiver. Adonai Mitchell should take a big step forward in place of Jermaine Burton (now at Alabama) and leading receiver Brock Bowers should flirt with 1,000 yards as a sophomore tight end.

On the other side, this is a formidable Oregon roster that has talent on both sides of the ball, but this is a tough ask in Week 1 for a new coach and quarterback to step into it. Not only is it a pseudo-home game for the reigning National Champions, but the team is very familiar with Nix's game (as noted above).

My favorite look on this game is the under. Nix-led teams haven't scored more than 14 points on Georgia and while there are plenty of blue chippers on the offensive line for the Ducks, scoring may be a chore.

With that being said, while I'm high on UGA's offense this season, Lanning knows this team inside and out and has a ton of returning talent to work with. I think this game is very methodical early and Georgia puts together a convincing, but low scoring win. I have this total pegged at 50 so I like getting in at under 53.5. This feels something like something in the range of 30-13 Georgia in the opener.
