Orioles vs. Rays Prediction and Pick
Shane McClanahan is one of the best pitchers in the entire league. He started for the AL in the all-star game, but since that experience, he has not pitched like an all-star. Tampa Bay has lost all three of his starts out of the break, McClanahan took the loss in two of them when he pitched 4.1 innings and gave up five earned runs against Cleveland and pitched 6.1 innings while allowing four earned runs in Detroit.
McClanahan had not allowed more than two earned runs in a game since April, but has now struggled in two straight starts allowing his ERA to rise to 2.24. At the all-star break, his ERA was 1.71, but that was not at all in line with his fielding independent pitching, 2.42 at the time. His expected ERA is now 2.44, and it seems like this regression was always going to come for McClanahan.
Rarely do you see a pitcher go through a season with a sub two ERA, let alone a 25-year-old in his second major league season. McClanahan’s metrics are all still great and he is going to bounce back on Saturday against Baltimore.
Pick: Rays -1.5 (+120)
