Two of the worst teams in the league kick off a three-game series on Friday with the Baltimore Orioles heading to Detroit to take on the Tigers. It feels odd to say, but the Orioles are playing much better ball than the Tigers and actually don’t look that terrible right now. They still are terrible but are playing above their head right now a bit.

The Orioles went 7-3 in the lead-up to this series and are actually scoring quite well over the last few weeks. Pitching will continue to be an issue for this team, but if the offense continues to produce, this team could stay out of last place in the AL East.

The Tigers, on the other hand, are in big trouble in the AL Central and have yet to cross into double-digit wins. The Tigers went 1-8 in their last nine games and look totally lost and non-competitive right now.

Orioles vs. Tigers Prediction and Pick

Picking between two bad teams is often harder than picking between two great teams. It’s hard to predict failure in baseball. The two starting pitchers are a good example of this. Jordan Lyles and Eduardo Rodriguez go head to head tonight with pretty similar starts to the year. Lyles is 2-2 with a 4.05 ERa and 1.50 WHIP in 33 ⅓ innings. Rodriguez is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 32 innings. The thing is that Rodriguez consistently gives up around three runs. In fact, he's given up exactly three runs in three of his six starts. But, he hasn't given up less than two or more than four.

Lyles, on the other hand, has twice-held teams to one run and shut out the Athletics over five innings last month. However, he has also given up five or more earned runs twice. So, while the stats are similar, the key here is predicting the games Lyles gets blown up.

The Tigers are not the type of team to get off on anyone at the plate. The Tigers have scored the least amount of runs of any team in the MLB this season with just 85. The best teams in the league nearly double that figure. I think Lyles holds it together here and puts the Orioles in a good spot to win.
