Now that we’re in the final stretch of the MLB season, we’re starting to see teams make a push for the playoffs while other teams are starting to fall out of the race.

The New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds top the list of teams that have started to get hot in recent weeks, while the New York Mets and San Diego Padres have begun to falter.

The Padres, who held onto a wild card spot in the National League for the majority of the MLB season, have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games and have recently lost that spot to the Reds.

As a result, the Padres odds to win the World Series this year at their longest that they’ve been all season. At the beginning of the 2021 campaign, the Padres were among the World Series favorites. Now, WynnBET has their odds listed at +4000, which is tied with the Athletics for the 11th longest odds on the board.

That’s a long way away from where they were at the start of the season, when they were third on the odds list behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

A big reason for their downfall has been their complete lack of offense in August. They rank 21st in total runs scored this month, racking up a measly 84 runs.

Up to this point, when their offense has been lacking, their pitching has been there to pick up the slack. That hasn’t been the case in August, as their starting rotation ranks 17th in ERA (4.37) this month. Their only strength has been their bullpen, which remains strong at a bullpen ERA of 3.12 in August, but the games have been all but decided by the time they get into the game.

San Diego isn’t out of the playoff picture yet, but their schedule the rest of the way out will do them no favors. They have three series left against both the Dodgers and Giants, as well as a series against the red-hot Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros.

The Padres will need to play some of their best baseball of the season the rest of the way out if they want to return to the playoffs in 2021.
