The St. Louis Cardinals continue to quietly gain ground on the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central and hope that the San Diego Padres can be their step on the ladder. The Cardinals split games with the Brewers in the series leading up to this one and were able to take Game 1 at home over the Padres 6-3.

San Diego won’t just lay down and let the Cards tickle their bellies, however. The Padres are the only team in striking distance of the 3-15 Dodgers right now and are just three games off the division lead. Problem is that the Padres offense has been awful and needs a swift kick in the pants if they hope to get past Dakota Hudson tonight.

Padres vs. Cardinals Prediction and Pick

Dakota Hudson has been one of the more undercover aces in the major leagues. He is a consistent winner but doesn't always get the props he deserves. Hudson will be making his 10th start of the season after blanking the Brewers at home on Friday over 4 ⅔ innings. Hudson isn’t going deep into games, but he is very effective when in the game.

The Padres, meanwhile, hope that veteran Yu Darvish can build on what has been a very strong May on the mound. Darvish is 4-2 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.08 WHIP on the year. But, Yu has been much better in May with a 3.08 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 26 ⅓ innings. Darvish has a bigger chance to get blown up, but I’d argue that Hudson is more likely to have a run-of-the-mill bad start. I’m willing to bet that Hudson gives up 3-4 runs and Darvish doesn’t have one of his five-plus run disasters.

Pick: Padres -105 to win
