Padres vs. Cubs Prediction and Odds for Thursday, June 16 (Joe Musgrove Working Towards a Cy Young in San Diego)
By Matt De Saro
The San Diego Padres got some awful news this week that Fernando Tatis Jr.’s recovery is progressing slowly three months after having surgery on a broken wrist in March. Tatis still can’t swing a bat, which is a problem for the Padres’ season-long success. So far, however, they have been playing phenomenal baseball in his absence.
San Diego is in a dead heat with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the NL West and are 7-3 in their last 10 games. This game is going to be very dangerous when Tatis finally gets back on the field. But, in the meantime, the Padres are relying a lot on starting pitching to get the job done. That should be the case again today when they wrap up their series vs. the Chicago Cubs.

Padres vs. Cubs Prediction and Pick
Aside from Tatis, the best player on the roster is Joe Musgrove. He might even be the best talent on this team when Tatis is on the field. Musgrove has been Cy Young material at 7-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. All of those stats rank him in the top 10 of all pitchers while he ranks 22nd in strikeouts with 72.
Musgrove hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a start all year and is on a 14-inning scoreless streak. So far in June, Musgrove is 2-0 with a no earned runs to his name as well as 14 strikeouts. Long story short, Musgrove is impossible to bet against right now.
The Cubs have yet to announce a starter for Thursday but I don’t see a name on this roster that would make me bet against the Padres in this spot. Musgrove is too good and the Cubs rank 15th in batting average, 18th in runs per game, and strike out nearly once per inning on average.
Pick: Padres -1.5 (-125)
