The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks continue their opening series with each other having split the first two games. The Padres came out and lost game one 4-2, but shut out Arizona last night 3-0 thanks to an epic start from Sean Manaea. The newest addition to the Padres rotation spun seven innings of no-hit baseball.

Had this not been the first game of the season, he might have pitched a no-hitter. He really looked that good. Jurickson Profar hit a two-run shot that would prove all the Padres needed to win their first game of the season.

Padres vs. Diamondbacks Prediction and Pick

Joe Musgrove gets the ball tonight for the Padres coming off a very successful 2021 season in San Diego. Musgrove finished the year with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 181 ⅓ innings of work. He did struggle against the Diamondbacks last year with a 2-2 record and a 4.08 ERA. But, I think tonight he gets some revenge for those 11 innings of mediocrity.

In fact, I think this whole team surprises people with the start I expect them to have to the year. They had a rough 2021 but I see them contending for the division if all goes well. Of course, they will be without Fernando Tatis Jr. for the foreseeable future which doesn’t help.

The Diamondbacks starter tonight, Zach Davies, has to be looking like a treat right now for the Padres. Davies somehow retained his status as a starter after a 6-12 season and a 5.78 ERA with the Cubs. Chicago lost the last four-game she started and I didn’t see any improvement in the offseason. Davies went 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 7.1 innings. He allowed four earned runs on four hits including two home runs. He also walked two while striking out just four. The Padres are going to feast on his lack of control tonight en route to a runline win.

Pick: Padres -1.5 (+100)
