The San Diego Padres fell short of expectations in 2021, but will look to rectify that in 2022. And their start to the season looks the part of an NL contender.

The Padres have jumped out to a 4-1 start and now will look to take the second of a 3 game set against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday with ace Yu Darvish on the mound.

Can Darvish follow up his strong Opening Day start with another against a division rival? Let's check out the odds from WynnBET Sportsbook:

  • Giants: -1.5 (+175)

Padres vs. Giants Prediction and Pick

Darvish was stellar in his first start of the season, tossing 6 innings of no hit ball. I expect him to keep this up on Tuesday night against the Giants. While he has an ERA north of 5 in 7 seven starts, all of his metrics hold up, striking out nearly 11 batters per 9 innings and keeping his WHIP (walks, hits per inning) just over 1.

The Giants offense has been slow out of the gates early on, scoring more than 3 runs just once in 4 games thus far, but it's their starting pitching that may be a concern on Tuesday. The team is sending out Alex Cobb, who they acquired in the offseason for his first start with the team. Coming off a stellar season with the Angels, Cobb may be on the wrong end of some negative regression this season.

He posted a home run to fly ball rate of 8%, which is the lowest he has allowed since 2014. He has not had a percentage lower than 13% since then, and I believe we see this even out quickly in San Francisco. The Padres are ripe for a big night at the plate with power hitters like Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth in the lineup to smoke the ball out of the park against a potential gas can like Cobb.

I think we are getting a great price on the more proven pitcher with a deeper lineup, as evident thus far. The Giants don't seem up to par with last season's MLB best record and Cobb is a poster boy for negative regression. I'm jumping on this price.

LEAN: Padres ML -103
