The San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants meet at Oracle Park for game 162.

The Padres will give the start to Reiss Knehr (1-1, 4.85 ERA), a reliever/spot-starter that has yet to pitch past the fourth inning in any start. The 24-year old right-hander will be making his lone appearance of the 2021 season against the NL West rival Giants.

San Francisco will send Logan Webb (10-3, 2.93 ERA) to the mound, who has had a surprising 2021 campaign for the Giants after having a career 5.36 ERA prior to this season. Webb has made two appearances against San Diego this year and has a .300 batting average against (12-for-40), allowing three earned runs in six innings on April 30th, taking a loss, and giving up four runs in just four innings on Sept. 23rd in a no-decision.

Giants Playoff Scenarios

  • If San Francisco loses and the Los Angeles Dodgers win today, the Giants and Dodgers will play a tie-breaking game 163 on Monday. Alex Wood would be the projected starter in the tie-breaker for the Giants if the game is to be played.
  • If San Francisco loses the game-163 tie-breaker, then it will be the top team in the NL Wild Card. To put their entire surprise season on the line in just one nine-inning contest would be devastating.
  • If the Giants win today and seal up the NL West as Champions with a franchise record 107 wins, then they would play the winner of the NL Wild Card game, which would be Los Angeles or the St. Louis Cardinals.

Padres vs. Giants Prediction

The Giants must have had champagne sitting in their locker room for quite some time now. The ice has all melted, along with their wilting NL West Champion hopes and dreams.

San Francisco has split the first two games of this final regular season series with the San Diego, but its offense has failed to put up many runs. The injury to the “captain”, first baseman Brandon Belt, may be showing its effect on this lineup. The Giants have scored just five runs and picked up 11 hits in their last two games.

The Padres have already spoiled their own season, now it’s time to throw a wrench in someone else’s. I’m taking the Padres at +175 because this already chaotic playoff picture is about to become even more chaotic.
