The San Diego Padres and Cleveland Guardians finish up a short two-game series on Wednesday at Progressive Field. The Padres continue their assault on the rest of the league and are fighting for the NL West lead with the Dodgers and Giants. San Diego won five of their previous six games before heading to Cleveland on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Guardians are not having as good of a year. They did snap a seven-game losing streak on Friday against the A’s. The Guardians went on to sweep Oakland in three games and enter this series on a bit of a winning streak.

After Tuesday night was rained out, both teams will play a back-to-back doubleheader beginning at 1:10 pm ET on Wednesday.

Padres vs. Guardians Prediction and Pick

While the Guardians are on a “hot streak,” it's important to look at the team they did it against. The A’s have a losing record and are in danger of falling into last place in the AL West. In fact, in looking back at the Guardians’ wins this year, I noticed that most of them came against teams ranging from below average to bad.

Cleveland took two of four from the Royals to start the year. The Royals are having a terrible season and are well below .500. The Guardians followed that up with a 2-0 sweep of the Reds. A team on pace to be the worst in the history of professional baseball. Their most impressive stretch was a 3-0 sweep of the White Sox. And while they were expected to be good, Chicago had an awful start to the year and was playing like garbage.

When the Guardians do play a good team, they have had zero success this year. They were swept by the Giants, Yankees, and Angles already this year. Take away wins against current sub-.500 teams and the Guardians are winless on the year.

I don’t think I can trust them to turn this trend around against a hot Padres team as one-time Cleveland ace Mike Clevinger returns after Tommy John surgery vs. his former squad.

Pick: Padres ML -160
