National League rivals close out a three game series on Thursday when the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres do battle at the Great American Ballpark.

The Padres took the first two games as they look for the sweep this afternoon. The Reds are now 1-13 straight up in their last 14 games. They only covered one game during that run. Long story short, they're currently the worst team in baseball. By being more than 10 games under .500, it’s not even really that close.

The Padres aren’t exactly setting the world on fire as far as stats go. But, they are 11-7 and third in a very competitive NL West.

Padres vs. Reds Prediction and Pick

There are a few bright spots on the Reds despite a horrid season. Tyler Mahle is not one of those spots. With a 6.88 ERA and 1.71 WHIP, he's more of a liver spot. Mahle has seen his ERA rise in every start this season and has ballooned to the highest it has been during his six years in the majors. Normally I would say that Mahle needs the right game to get back on track. But now, I think that this whole team is in a downward spiral and Mahle is caught up in the constant losing.

Nick Martinez will be making his fourth start for the Padres after a few rough games. Martinez has a 4.30 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in his first 14 ⅔ innings of work. Control has been a major issue as he walked nine batters in his last 9 ⅔ innings. If anyone else on the Padres was pitching this would be an easy call for me. But, I am having a hard time betting on Martinez.

After the way Game 1 went, I think a pick on the total makes sense here. With the pitching issues on both sides, this game could go either way. The Padres have gone over 11 runs in a couple of their recent games. Plus, the Reds get blown out all the time. They have allowed opposing teams to score four or more runs in eight of their last nine games.

Pick: OVER
