Sometimes, the favorites are truly the best bet.

The San Diego Padres were the reported front-runners to land Washington Nationals superstar Juan Soto ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline Tuesday afternoon, and they ended up with their guy with hours to go.

According to MLB Network and FOX Sports' insider Jon Morosi, Soto, along with Nationals first baseman Josh Bell are headed to Southern California in the biggest blockbuster trade of the season.

Washington receives four prospects in the deal via ESPN's Jeff Passan, including three position player prospects in shortstop C.J. Abrams, outfielders Robert Hassell III, and James Wood. Two pitchers also come over in the deal, including Big Leaguer LHP MacKenzie Gore, a former top prospect and No. 3 overall pick from 2017, as well as RHP prospect Jarlin Susana.

At the start of the 2022 season, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel had Abrams as the top prospect in the Padres' system, and No. 4 overall in his top 100. Hassell ranks No. 2, and 31st overall amongst their top prospects.

Additionally, Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer was also included in the deal back to Washington. The former 2015 World Series champion with the Kansas City Royals is signed through 2025 on an 8-year, $144 million contract.

Padres' World Series Odds Skyrocket Following Juan Soto Trade

Several sportsbooks are scrambling to update their futures prices on the Padres following arguably one of the biggest trades in MLB history.

Via Joe Fortenbaugh of ESPN's Daily Wager, the Padres were listed as high as 22/1 to win the World Series, and then dropped down to 20/1 following the acquisition of All-Star closer Josh Hader from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Now, the Padres' consensus number is around 12/1, including 6/1, or +600 to win the NL Pennant, with several other books going even lower.
