Houston Texans rookie quarterback Davis Mills is getting thrown into the fire in Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers, as he will replace the injured Tyrod Taylor and make his first NFL start.

Mills will get the wonderful treat of facing the Panthers’ No. 1-ranked defense, as Carolina has allowed the fewest yards and points through the first two weeks of the NFL season. Oh, and he has to do it on a short week.

The oddsmakers at WynnBET have adjusted the spread for the Thursday Night Football matchup between Carolina and Houston, as the Panthers are now eight-point road favorites (they opened at -7.5)

Houston has covered the spread in its first two games this season against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns, but it may have a tougher time against the Panthers with Mills under center.

The rookie completed eight of his 18 pass attempts against the Browns for 102 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Mills held his own against a solid Browns defense, but things will get tougher against a Carolina team that allowed just six first downs against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.

While I usually wouldn’t love betting on a team led by Sam Darnold that is more than a touchdown favorite, the line movement doesn’t change my pick for this one.

I took the Panthers as my survivor pick this week, and if you were comfortable with them covering the 7.5-point spread, I’d still play them at eight points in a game that could get out of hand if Mills struggles.
