As we begin to prepare for the 2021 NFL season, debates are being had about who will excel and who will disappoint.

One of the top storylines of the season will be the return of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, whose 2020 season came to an early end when he suffered an ankle injury in Week 5 against the New York Giants.

WynnBET originally had Prescott as the betting favorite to lead the NFL in passing yards in 2021, but Patrick Mahomes had recently taken over as the new favorite to lead in that statistic. Mahomes is listed as the +300 favorite, and Prescott is listed second on the odds list at +500. The next quarterbacks on the list are Josh Allen (+800), Tom Brady (+900), and Aaron Rodgers (+1000).

Mahomes has already been crowned an all-time great quarterback by many NFL fans, despite only being the starter for the Chiefs for three seasons. While I won’t argue that Mahomes isn’t one of the best quarterbacks in the league, I’ll argue that Prescott deserves to be the betting favorite to lead the NFL in passing yards this season.

Before his ankle injury last year, Prescott was on pace to smash the NFL record for most passing yards in a single season. Peyton Manning currently holds the record, recording 5,477 passing yards in 2013. Last season, Prescott was averaging 371.2 passing yards per game, which would have given him a season total of 5,939.2 if he would’ve been able to keep up that pace for 16 games.

While keeping up that sort of blistering pace was unlikely, Prescott still would have been the league leader in passing yards even if he took a slight step back the rest of the season.

Prescott has a plethora of weapons at his disposal this season, including CeeDee Lamb who is coming off a stellar season as a rookie despite having Andy Dalton throwing him the ball for the majority of last year.

The Kansas City Chiefs will likely have the better team, compared to the Dallas Cowboys, but having the lead in the majority of games could possibly hurt Mahomes’ passing numbers as they’ll look to run the ball to close their games out.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys defense is still expected to be one of the most porous units in the NFL which means Prescott and the Dallas offense will likely spend a good portion of their games playing from behind, which encourages the passing game.

There’s no doubt Patrick Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but I’ll take Prescott to lead the NFL in passing yards at his +500 odds.
