Patriots Fans Should Be Terrified at Prospect of Matt Patricia Taking Over Playcalling
By Peter Dewey
The New England Patriots are searching for a new playcaller after losing Josh McDaniels to the Las Vegas Raiders, and it appears a frontrunner has emerged.
Former Detroit Lions head coach and Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is reportedly the leader to take over playcalling duties in Mac Jones' second season in the NFL.
Yes, you read that right. Matt Patricia calling the offensive plays for the Patriots in 2022. Oh boy.
Listen, I'm not one to doubt Bill Belichick, but this seems like a major risk to take when you have a second-year quarterback you're hoping to develop into a star. Jones had a solid rookie season, but he was definitely more of a game manager for the Patriots.
Patricia was 13-29-1 as the Lions head coach from the 2018-2020 seasons, and it's worth noting that his quarterback at the time, Matthew Stafford, had a few of his wort seasons with Patricia running the team.
Since 2015, Stafford's two worst seasons in terms of completion percentage both came under the Patricia regime. He also had his worst passer rating over that stretch in 2018 and threw just 21 touchdowns that season, his lowest since 2012 in a full season.
So yeah, there's a reason to be a little worried about Mac's development if Patricia is calling the shots.
WynnBET Sportsbook currently has the Patriots at +4000 to win the Super Bowl in the 2022 season, which is surprising since the team made the playoffs in the 2021 campaign.
However, the AFC has improved greatly with Davante Adams, Russell Wilson and others moving into the conference, so Patricia, Belichick and Jones will have their work cut out for them in 2022.
