PGA Tour Odds: Fortinet Championship Preview and Predictions

It feels like the PGA Tour just ended yesterday! Well, it basically did.

I hope you all enjoyed the one weekend of offseason that professional golf has, because we’re back at it this week for the first event of the 2021-2022 PGA Tour season: the Fortinet Championship.

Previously known as the Safeway Open, the Fortinet Championship will once again take place at Silverado Country Club in Napa, California. This event is usually only played by PGA Tour newcomers and guys who need to rack up as many FedEx Cup points as they can before the big boys start playing again, but this year’s edition of the event will feature some of the top names in golf, including World No. 1 Jon Rahm.

Rahm is using the event as a warmup for the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits that’s set to begin next week.

Fortinet Championship Preview and Key Stats

As is fitting for the first golf tournament of the PGA Tour, Silverado Country Club is a pretty straight forward golf course. It’s a Par 72 measuring a little bit over 7,200 yards, and there aren’t very many key characteristics or things to keep an eye on.

Long drivers will find success at this track, but you also have to have a very good wedge game. 

As Justin Ray from Twenty First Group points out, the straight forward tee shots give a plethora of short approaches onto these greens.

Keep in mind that with this being the first tournament of the season, you’ll have to reference last year’s stats when handicapping the event. Things like recent form and past performance at this course should be weighted heavier than usual.

Fortniet Championship Predictions and Picks

Kevin Na +1700

Outside of Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm, no golfer finished the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season as hot as Kevin Na. His last six starts were T2, T23, T2, T8, T17, 3rd. That’s a hell of a run, and he presents a ton of value at +1700 this week.

Na also has a solo second and solo seventh finish here at this course so he has great experience at Silverado Country Club as well. He finished T36 in birdie average last season, T38 in approaches from 50-125 yards, and he has the best short game on Tour as he led the pack in strokes gained: around the green.

Harold Varner III +4000

While he fell short of qualifying for the Tour Championship, Harold Varner III had a solid end to his PGA Tour season. He finished the year with three Top 15 finishes in his final four starts with a T11 and T12 in stacked fields in the the first two rounds of the playoffs.

He’s also made the cut in all six starts at this tournament and has finished in the top 20 three times. His game fits the course, and he finished the season on a hot streak. He’s worth the bet at 40/1.

Hank Lebioda +15000

You’re not going to find a better bet at 150/1 than Hank Lebioda. He’s a wizard with a wedge in his hand and he had three top 10 finishes in a row in July before a family emergency derailed his momentum.

With a few weeks off, Lebioda should be re-focused and ready to attack a weak field and a course that fits his style of play. He’s a great long shot bet to put a couple of dollars on this week.
