PGA Tour Power Rankings: Who Will Win the FedEx Cup Playoffs?
The PGA Tour's regular season officially wrapped up with last week's Wyndham Championship.
Now, the top 125 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will advance to the playoffs, starting with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. After this week, the top 70 golfers will advance to the BMW Championship, finally, the top 30 golfers will play in the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
So, with the playoffs about to begin, let's break down my top 20 power rankings to win the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Since sportsbooks don't offer odds to win the FedEx Cup, I'll make my own.
FedEx Cup Playoff Power Rankings
1. Scottie Scheffler (+850)
Scottie Scheffler is the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, and is first in the standings heading into the playoffs. Because of that, he's rightfully deserving of being the betting favorite. He hasn't competed much over the summer, so if there's one downside that might hurt him, it's rust.
2. Cameron Smith (+900)
Cameron Smith will enter the FedEx Cup Playoff coming off his first Major win at the Open Championship. Next to Scheffler, he's been the most impressive golfer on Tour this year.
3. Tony Finau (+1100)
Nobody is coming into the FedEx Cup Playoffs hotter than Tony Finau. He's wiped the title of perennial choker, and has won back-to-back tournaments to end the regular season. In the past, it's usually the hottest golfer who wins the FedEx Cup, and this year, that guy might just be Tony Finau.
4. Rory McIlroy (+1100)
Rory McIlroy enters the playoffs No. 6 in the FedEx Cup rankings. He's already won the FedEx Cup twice in 2016 and 2019, so he has the experience to pull it off. He ranks first in total strokes gained this season.
5. Xander Schauffele (+1200)
Xander Schauffele has three wins this PGA Tour season, included in two of his last three starts. He's hitting his stride at the right time, and he has always played well at the Tour Championship.
6. Sam Burns (+1400)
Sam Burns might be the most underrated golfer on the PGA Tour. He has three wins this season, and is ranked third in the standings heading into the playoffs. A lack of form could be a concern, considering his last four starts finished; T27, MC, T66, T42.
7. Patrick Cantlay (+1400)
Don't underestimate last year's FedEx Cup champion. He enters the playoffs coming off three-straight top 10 finishes, and ranking seventh on the Tour in total strokes gained.
8. Justin Thomas (+1450)
When Justin Thomas is on the top of his game, few golfers are better. The problem is that he's inconsistent, and like Sam Burns, enters the FedEx Cup Playoffs in poor form with his last three finishes being T37, MC, and T53.
9. Will Zalatoris (+1600)
Will Zalatoris is the best ball striker on the PGA Tour. His putting hurts him, but if he can win one of the first two playoff tournaments, he can be a serious contender to win the Tour Championship.
10. Sungjae Im (+1700)
Sungjae Im is a great ball striker, but has the short game to go with it. He's entering the playoffs on a hot streak, with two-straight T2 finishes.
11. Matt Fitzpatrick (+1800)
It's surprising to see that Matt Fitzpatrick ranks 14th in the FedEx Cup standings, considering he's the U.S. Open winner. A large part of that is that he hasn't compered on U.S. soil since that major win back in June.
12. Jon Rahm (+2000)
Even more surprising than Fitzy being ranked 14th in the standings, is Jon Rahm ranking 16th. With that being said, he has the fire power to go on a run and win the whole damn thing.
13. Cameron Young (+2100)
No disrespect to Cameron Young, who ranks ninth in the standings, I don't think he is going to be able to hang around the big guns for three-straight tournaments. This will be his first FedEx Cup Playoffs, and it'll be a great learning opportunity for him.
14. Jordan Spieth (+2500)
Jordan Spieth always seems on the precipice of turning back into the dominant golfer he was back from 2015-2017. He'll likely need to win one of the first two events to be in contention in the finale, but he already has a win at the Tour Championship, so if he can sneak into the top 10, watch out.
15. Hideki Matsuyama (+2700)
Hideki Matsuyama ranks 11th in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the playoffs. He's had injury issues that have plagued him in recent weeks, which will likely keep him from seriously contending these next few weeks.
16. Max Homa (+3000)
We need to start respecting Max Homa. He has won big events with strong fields, and enters the playoffs ranking 13th in the standings. With that being said, can he play well enough in three-straight tournaments to win the FedEx Cup? Only time will tell.
17. Collin Morikawa (+3500)
Ranking 22nd in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Collin Morikawa will need some magic to get in contention before the Tour Championship. He hasn't been in great form this year, but we know what he's capable of.
18. Viktor Hovland (+3600)
Viktor Hovland is a fantastic ball striker, but his play around the greens has cost him all season and will likely cost him in the playoffs. He ranks 204th in strokes gained: around-the-green.
19. Billy Horschel (+4000)
People forget that Billy Horschel won the FedEx Cup back in 2014. He won the Memorial Tournament this year, which boasted an extremely strong field. Who knows, crazier things have happened.
20. Joaquin Niemann (+4200)
Joaquin Niemann ranks 20th in the FedEx Cup standings, but if he can get a win in one of the first two playoff events, he could be dangerous come Tour Championship time. He can go low on any given day, but needs to limit bogeys if he wants to contend.
