Phil Mickelson is Overvalued at US Open
It’s US Open week on the PGA Tour, as the best golfers in the world head to Torrey Pines to compete in the third major tournament of the 2021 calendar year.
Phil Mickelson, fresh off his improbable win at the PGA Championship last month, has a chance to finally complete the career grand slam this week. With wins at the Masters, the British Open and the PGA Championship, Mickelson only needs the elusive US Open to become the sixth golfer in the history of the sport to achieve the feat.
Mickelson seems to be snakebitten at the US Open, as he has six second place finishes at the event, including the 2006 US Open when he only needed a par on the 72nd hole to win the event, but went on to double bogey to lose the tournament.
Don’t expect the storybook ending that Lefty will be hoping for this week.
WynnBET has Mickelson’s odds to win the US Open set at +7500, which is insanely overvalued. Yes, he may have been undervalued at the PGA Championship when he was set at +25000 (250/1) before tee-off, but one good weekend of golf doesn’t mean he should be all the way up to +7500 (75/1).
In Mickelson’s defense, Torrey Pines is his home course and he may have the most experience at the course than anyone else in the field. He has six top five finishes at events held at Torrey Pines, including three wins, two second place finishes and a third place finish. At this year’s Farmers Insurance Open, which was held at Torrey Pines, Mickelson finished 53rd.
Torrey Pines has hosted the US Open once before back in 2008, and Mickelson finished 18th.
Despite his experience at the track, Mickelson’s statistics this season don’t support him succeeding this week. He ranks 147th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained total, including 180th in strokes gained: off-the-tee, and 114th in strokes gained: putting. The best area of his game is his approaches, where he still ranks just 89th in strokes gained: approach.
Don’t buy into the hype on Phil Mickelson this week, there are plenty of other golfers who are a better bet at +7500.
