Phil Mickelson, John Daly Just Trying to Get to Weekend at PGA Championship
The odds are stacked against two fan-favorite golfers at this week’s PGA Championship. Phil Mickelson and John Daly, both who are playing on the past-winner exemption, will try to create some magic at this week’s event at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
You have to scroll quite far down the odds list to find both player’s names as WynnBET has Mickelson’s odds set at +25000 and Daly’s odds set at +250000 to win this weekend. If you convert those odds to implied probably, Vegas is giving Mickelson a 0.4% chance to win his fifth major championship and Daly a 0.04% chance to win his third major championship.
If either was able to pull off the seemingly insurmountable feat, they would become the oldest golfer to win a major championship by a wide margin. The record is currently held by Julius Boros who won the 1968 edition of the event at the age of 48. Mickelson, aged 50, and Daly, aged 55, would break that record by a significant amount.
Believe it or not, both golfers are entering the event in relatively decent form. Mickelson held the outright lead after the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship two weeks ago, and Daly recorded a T2 finish at the Champions Tour’s Insperity Invitational in his last start.
Mickelson won the 2005 PGA Championship which was held at the Baltusrol Golf Club, and has two top 10 finishes at the event since, most notably a second place finish in 2014.
Mickelson is hoping to finally capture a win at the US Open this year which would complete his career grand slam.
John Daly’s PGA Championship win came back in 1991 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in one of the most storied tournaments in major championship history. Daly was the ninth alternate and was only given the chance to compete due to several injuries and withdraws the week prior to the event.
Daly’s last win on the PGA Tour came at the 2004 Buick Invitational.
