The Pittsburgh Steelers will play their second preseason game before most of the NFL even plays one, as they’ll take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night,

Pittsburgh, without Ben Roethlisberger, defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL’s Hall of Fame Game 16-3 last Thursday.

With the Eagles still waiting to name Jalen Hurts (it’s almost inevitable at this point) as their starting quarterback, Philly should have some of its starters playing in Thursday’s matchup to get a look at Hurts in a game under Nick Sirianni.

The Steelers will have the benefit of a game being under their belt, and Mason Rudolph, who completed six of his nine passes in the Hall of Fame Game is looking to solidify himself as the team’s backup quarterback over Dwayne Haskins.

Here’s a look at the odds for Thursday’s matchup via WynnBET:

Eagles vs. Steelers Spread, Odds and Over/Under

Spread:

Steelers +1.0 (-105)

Eagles -1.0 (-115)

Moneyline:

Steelers: +105

Eagles: -125

Over/Under: 34.5 (Over: -105/Under: -115)

Steelers vs. Eagles Betting Trends

It’s hard to find trends in the preseason as the players vary from week to week and there’s usually a good deal of turnover. However, Pittsburgh has hit the under in 11 of its last 16 away games and Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game also hit the under.

The Eagles hit the under in seven of their last 10 games to finish the 2020 season, and they were just 6-10 against the spread last season.

Even with Hurts in the lineup, although he may not play much, oddsmakers are favoring the under (-115) for Thursday’s matchup.

Steelers vs. Eagles Prediction and Pick

While Hurts could see a few series on Thursday, I still like the Steelers to take this matchup given their depth at quarterback.

Rudolph, Haskins and Joshua Dobbs are a solid trio to roll out in a preseason game, all with experience as well, as they were able to easily beat a Dallas team that lacks the same depth at the position.

Given the fact that the Eagles are favored, I think Pittsburgh at +105 on the moneyline is a great bet to make.

I’m also going to keep riding with the under, like I did in the Hall of Fame Game, as Mike Tomlin is the most profitable under coach in the preseason in the NFL.

Tomlin’s crew is already 1-for-1 this preseason, and I expect them to keep it going with the total at 34.5 in their second appearance.
