I am in love with this series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, which finishes up Monday evening.

Both of these teams are contenders to take their respective divisions if they have strong showings in the second half of the season.

The Cardinals went 2-4 in the lead-up to this series and already dropped the first two games right out of the gate before a win on Sunday. On the flip side, the Phillies are 7-4 in that span.

Can the Cardinals turn things around or is their hope of making a run at the NL Central crown in trouble?

Here are the odds for this game from consensus sportsbooks.

Phillies vs. Cardinals Odds, Run Line, and Total

  • Phillies: -1.5 (+160)
  • Cardinals: +1.5 (-196)

Moneyline:

  • Phillies: -110

Phillies vs. Cardinals Prediction and Pick

At first glance, this appears to be one of the better pitching matchups to start the week. And while it might be, I’m not so sure this game will end up as close as the stats suggest.

Aaron Nola and Miles Mikolas share the rubber tonight with pretty similar stats. Nola (5-6), with a 3.15 ERA and 0.93 WHIP, and Mikolas (5-7) boasting a 2.72 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. Both are also coming off questionable starts and are looking to bounce back in this tough matchup.

Where the separation lies is in the head-to-head career stats between these pitchers and the lineups they are facing today.  While Mikolas has a solid .240 batting average against the Phillies, the Cardinals lineup has a .332 career average and .788 OPS against Nola over 64 at-bats.

I also think that Nola’s last start, a loss to the sad Washington Nationals, was a bad sign. It was his second bad start, and the Nationals are among the worst scoring offenses in the league. Mikolas held Philly to two runs the last time these teams faced off and I’m betting on a similar outcome today.

Pick: Phillies -110 ML
