The New York Mets got back on track last night after losing a series to the Giants by beating their NL East rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies. Rivals might be an overstatement considering how far the Phillies trail the Mets in the division standings.

Philly may be in third place, but they are 8.5 games behind the Mets in first and in real danger of falling out of the race altogether. The Mets are now 7-3 against the Phillies and are hoping to keep the party going today at Citi Field.

Phillies vs. Mets Prediction and Pick

At this point in the year, there is no debate on which is the better team between these two divisional foes. The Mets are one of the best teams in the entire league right now while the Phillies are struggling just to stay afloat. Philly relies too much on their offense which has been very inconsistent this season so far. They did squeak into the top 10 of most metrics, but this is an offense that was thought by some to be one of the best in baseball. After two months they are barely average.

Luckily, Bryce Harper is on fire at the plate with a .454 batting average and 12 RBIs in his last ten games. Unfortunately, the Phillies are 3-7 in those games due to him being the only guy on the team hitting. The offense woke up last night at Citi Field, but the Phils still lost a heartbreaker 8-6.

Taijuan Walker gets the start for New York tonight and is in the middle of a very improbable resurgence. Walker is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. It’s by far his best start in years and the Mets are hoping he can pitch a full season after failing to do so in four of his last five seasons. Walker has seen the Phillies three times already this year with very mixed results. He pitched seven scoreless innings in his first two games against Philly but gave up seven runs in four innings in his last attempt.

Walker has since settled down and allowed just three combined runs in his last three starts. I’m happy to take him to get a bit of revenge tonight as a part of a much better team from top to bottom.

Pick: Mets -122 / Lean Mets -1.5 (+160)
